Our Final Concert on 5/15/2008 at the PAC was absolutely wonderful. Hats off to the students for doing a great job. Get a recording here!

Congrats to Jazz Band, Concert Band and Advanced Band for their Superior Ratings (the only school out of five states to receive three superiors) at the Kings Island Festival last Saturday in Kings Mills, OH! Jazz Band won grand champion.

Congrats to Concert Band and Advanced band for their Gold Ratings at the Indiana State School Music Association Large Group Festival last Saturday in Columbus, IN!

Solo and ensemble was a great success! Over 90 S-DMS students participated! Parent and student workers made this event incredible. The Judges claimed this to be one of the most helpful and organized sites that they have ever adjudicated. Congrats to Dee Elfers for making it to state festival as an 8th grader!

Hello and welcome S-DMS band students, parents and guests to the home of the award-winning S-DMS bands. We are looking forwad to a wonderful year of making music and learning!

For the 2007-2008 school year all band information will be posted on this site in order to limit paper use. Permission slips, calendars, upcoming events, pictures, and useful information can all be downloaded from this site. We will gladly provide hard copies of all information upon request.
If we can ever be of assistance, do not hesitate to give us a call or e-mail us at the above locations.

Sincerely,

Mr. Ralenkotter

Questions we should answer...
1. Why go to festivals?
We need to be accountable! We should be able to demonstrate in measurable terms that we are doing what we as instructors and students are charged to do. It is appropriate to have impartial, outside experts evaluate us! These events are our ISTEP or SAT exams. The comments that we receive allow us to adjust what we need educationally and to re-inforce that which is already good. We are not concerned about wood and metal (trophies & plaques) but rather the learning process from point A to B. We should be able to set goals and to meet them. If we do our jobs right then good things will happen and become a bi-product of good learning (trophies & plaques).
2. Entertainment vs. Education, why is there a difference?
We believe that schools should offer experiences that students cannot get at home, otherwise why would we go to the expense of having an educational system? A quality band program is educational on many levels.
That said, a well-prepared and musical concert is very entertaining to experience. Our focus during the day however, is not entertaining the kids but rather educating them in the demanding process leading to that performance, (good things take good work!) During that time, students develop as they strive daily, learning to set and meet goals in a collaborative setting.

Bless you great kids. I am so proud of how much you have improved through your efforts!
